日本原産の樹木としても知られてる黒文字 ( クロモジ ) は、クスノキ科の落葉低木です。 クロモジの若枝は緑色ですが、成長するにつれて黒色の斑点が見られる（ まるでお経が書いてあるようにように見える ）ことから「黒文字」と言われています。※名前の由来には諸説あります。 標高の高い地域に多く自生しており、3月下旬から4月中旬にかけて開花し黄色の小さな花が咲き、秋頃になると赤い実をつけます。​また、樹皮を削ると（ 枝葉を折ると ）さわやかな甘い香りが漂います。​​​ クロモジの幹枝はしなやかで、積雪に対して幹を倒伏させ雪圧に耐えることができます。また、倒伏した幹の代わりに根元から次々に新しい幹を萌芽させる性質があります。 幹の寿命は30年程度と言われており、樹木としては比較的短いですが、大きくなった幹が枯れてしまっても、新しい幹が次々と入れ替わって世代交代をしながら株そのものを維持・成長させる生活様式を持っています。 Kuromoji (Lindera umbellata), also known as a tree native to Japan, is a deciduous shrub belonging to the laurel family.
